Algorithms and Hardware for Audio Signal Processing

We develop algorithms and hardware for audio signal processing, spanning the full path from signal-processing theory to custom integrated circuits.

Audio signal processing spans the complete signal chain, from sound capture and transduction to sound synthesis and audio effects. Although audio signals occupy comparatively low frequencies, high-quality systems must provide high dynamic range, low latency, low distortion, and freedom from artifacts such as aliasing. Meeting these requirements demands the joint optimization of signal-processing algorithms and analog, digital, and mixed-signal hardware.

At the IIP Group, we take a cross-stack approach to audio signal processing, combining advances in signal-processing theory, algorithms, hardware architectures, and integrated-circuit design. Our research spans mathematical foundations, software implementations, embedded systems, and custom integrated circuits, enabling efficient real-time audio systems beyond the capabilities of conventional processors and digital signal processors. This cross-stack approach enables audio effects, sound synthesis, recording technology, and embedded audio systems that meet the performance and efficiency requirements of modern applications.
